What the hell, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services?

The Affordable Care Act does lots of things. It removes lifetime limits so that people with cancer or chronic diseases won't have to go without treatment because they've reached their "limit". It allows parents to continue to cover their children until the age of 26. It will also provide free birth control to women...assuming you don't work for a Catholic organization of course.

The Catholics are trying to get a bill passed that would allow religious organizations the right not to provide free birth control as part of their insurance plan. So, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services added an exemption for the Catholics, but are now asking for comments. The ability to submit comments was supposed to expire yesterday, although the form is still up today.

I can't believe that the Catholics are so insecure and distrustful of their own members that they think it's necessary to not provide free birth control as part of their insurance plans. A true practicing Catholic won't take birth control regardless of the cost. On the other hand, there's a whole bevy of true practicing Catholics who don't think they're going to go to hell if they practice birth control.

But ultimately, regardless of the Catholics reasoning, this is just another example of religion trying to force its way into our government.

Damn it.

Comments

  1. I'm actually just pleased that they opened it up for comment. In the past these kinds of exemptions for religious employers would have been included without any kind of option for the public to object. So at least there is that...
